Westminster votes against Berkeley’s Paddington Green Police Station scheme

Westminster City Council has refused plans from Berkeley Homes to build 556 homes on the site of the former Paddington Green Police Station.

Berkeley had proposed three buildings of 15, 18 and 32 storeys, providing 38% affordable housing on site, 40,000 sq ft of office space and 10,000 sq ft of commercial floorspace.

Plans also included public realm improvements along Newcastle Place and an £18m CIL contribution for Westminster, alongside an estimated annual expenditure of £20m from new residents and employees.

The committee chairman was the only member to vote in favour of the scheme, with five councillors opposing. This saw the committee go against planning officer recommendations and refuse the scheme.

Councillors complained that the height would harm views from Primrose Hill and Hyde Park and impact nearby heritage assets.

The plans will now go to the mayor of London for the final decision.
