Adam Crozier has been handed the job of reigniting investor enthusiasm for Whitbread after being appointed as chairman of the Premier Inn and Costa Coffee operator.
Mr Crozier, who joined the board in April last year and became senior independent director in September, is a former chief executive of Saatchi & Saatchi, the Football Association, Royal Mail and, until last summer, ITV.
He will succeed Richard Baker, whose decision to retire at the end of next month from the £350,000-a-year role after only three and a half years surprised some observers. His immediate predecessor, Sir Anthony Habgood, served as chairman for nine years.
