Whitbread delivers 14.8% sales bounce

Whitbread has announced sales growth of 14.8% in the three months to 16 August, the company announced today.

The UK’s largest hotel and restaurant group said the Olympics had delivered a marginal benefit of 1% on total revenue per room at its hotel business, which saw a strong performance overall.

Revenue per room at Premier Inn was up 2.3%, with occupancy up 0.4% to 79.4% and rate up 1.8%.

Like-for-like revenue per room grew 5.3% in London and 1.8% in the regions.

The company has opened 1,565 net rooms in the year to date, with plans to open 4,500 rooms and eight joint site restaurants in the full year.

Costa sales were up 22.9% to £432m, with total franchise sales up 19.9% to £175.6m.

It opened 50 new UK stores in the quarter.

Whitbread chief executive Andy Harrison said: “Whitbread has continued to deliver good sales growth with total sales up 14.8% in our second quarter. Our brands have outperformed in a tough economic climate, with like-for-like sales growth of 4.2% and we have continued our network expansion at Costa and Premier Inn.”
