Whitbread recruits Sainsbury’s Desmond Taljaard

Sainsbury director of property Desmond Taljaard (pictured) has quit the retailer to become group development director at Whitbread.

The role, which involves new business development, acquisitions and divestment, as well as management of the 2,000-strong property portfolio, was created specifically for  Taljaard.

Alan Parker, Whitbread’s chief executive, said: “Desmond is a highly experienced executive with a strong track record, particularly in the effective management of property and other assets.

“This is a critical period for us and in this new position, I am sure he will make a big contribution to Whitbread improving returns on our investments.”

An accountant by training, Taljaard’s past experience includes a stint as director of real estate at Hilton International.

Property strategy at Sainsbury, the UK’s third biggest retailer, has been under intense press scrutiny since its profit warning in July.
