Whitechapel resi scheme approved

Whitechapel-Central-570pxL&Q has secured planning for a 564-home mixed-use scheme in Whitechapel, E1.

The former Safestore facility will include 149 affordable homes and 38,000 sq ft of commercial space.

The scheme, close to Whitechapel station and straddling two nearby conservation areas, will assign nearly a third of the space to the public realm.

The site is one part of the larger redevelopment around Whitechapel Station, which includes the redevelopment of the Royal London Hospital, 600 homes and a new supermarket on the current Sainsbury’s site, and Londonnewcastle’s work on the Whitechapel Estate.

Designed by architects Stockwool, L&Q’s scheme will include flexible offices for SMEs, shops, a gym and a café around a new public square and landscaped walking routes. Construction is due to begin in early 2017, with first completions on site expected in 2018.
