Whitehall hotel plan under fire

Plans to open a hotel in Whitehall, London, in a former Treasury building have been strongly criticised as an open invitation to terrorists.

The Government is thought to be about to sign a £200m deal to sell the building to the Exchequer Partnership. The Government would then lease back a third of the building.

Labour MP Diane Abbott said the hotel would be”within a mortar bomb’s throw of Downing Street”. The Treasury building is Grade II. If the project is given planning permission, it will become the biggest under the Private Finance Initiative to involve a Government building
