Whittaker’s Peel expands retirement living

Regeneration specialist Peel L&P is exploring setting up a platform to develop retirement living schemes.

James Whittaker, executive director of development at Peel, told EG that its strategic waterside projects are ideal for retirement living within a range of residential types and tenures.

“We believe locations like Liverpool Waters should be developed for those facilities, mainly because they’re connected into city centres, to amenity spaces and leisure attractions and activities,” he said.

Peel already works with developers in the retirement living sector, including Belong and Montpelier, but is also looking at delivering such schemes itself by putting together a new business platform – much like it did for logistics.

“We put together a platform where we feel there’s growth in a sector and bring a specialism to the fore, bring the funding together, create the platform and then deliver a new business and an opportunity,” Whittaker said.

“There’s a lot of improvements to be made in that area in terms of how the combination of care and elderly living can be incorporated together, providing amenities and community hubs and space – but intermingling that with communities,” he added.

“It’s something we want to personally get involved in and get our business involved in because we think there are going to be some good opportunities there.”

Peel is already working with Belong at Wirral Waters on the other side of the Mersey and is working with Montpelier at Trafford Waters next to the Trafford Centre.

The developer is also looking at adding retirement living and a care facility on the MediaCity complex beside the Manchester Ship Canal.

“So at all the sites, we’re looking at those types of facilities,” Whittaker said.
