Will 2020 be a record year for skyscrapers?

The number of skyscrapers built around the world this year could be as high as 175, breaking 2018’s record of 164.

The expected number of 300m-plus completions in 2020 is between 17-30, and the expected number of 200m-plus completions in 2020 is 115-145, according to data from the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitats.

If the upper range is achieved, this could break the 2018 record, which is the highest since the council began tracking the figures in 1979.

Last year saw the second highest number of skyscrapers built since records began, at 152. But it saw 26 supertall buildings (300m or taller) completed, the most in any year. This bested 18 supertalls in 2018.

Overall, 126 buildings of at least 200m were completed last year, compared with 146 in 2018, a 14% decline.

Asia overall contributed 87 of the 126 completions, for a 69% share – down from 110 completions for a 75% share of 2018’s total.

The US was again the second-most prolific country, with 14 completions, for 11% of 2019’s total. The number was equal to 2018’s total, though the percentage represented was lower.

It was followed by the United Arab Emirates, with nine completions, down from 10 in 2018.

The tallest building to complete in 2019 was the Tianjin CTF Finance Centre, at 530m. It is now tied for the third tallest building in China with its sister tower, Guangzhou CTF Finance Centre (also 530m) and is the seventh tallest in the world. This marks the fifth year in a row in which the tallest building to complete is in China.

In Europe, the Lakhta Center in St. Petersburg became the region’s new tallest building at 462m. It is also the world’s 13th tallest building.
