Window fell off flats a year before death of Mick Ferris

A window pane fell from a luxury apartment block and nearly killed two people a year before a similar incident caused the death of a pedestrian.

Mick Ferris, 53, a coach driver from Hoo in Kent, died on Tuesday morning after he was struck by a piece of glass that fell 250ft from the Corniche, a new block of multimillion-pound flats on Albert Embankment in Vauxhall, south London.

It was revealed yesterday that a window slipped from its mounting at another apartment in the same development in August last year, narrowly missing two carpenters working below and smashing on the pavement.

The developer, St James, which is part of Berkeley Group, confirmed that the incident took place during the construction phase. “A casement window fell from the upper floor. No one was hurt,” the company said.
