Woking kicks out plans for £300m football stadium and resi

Woking Football Club has been refused planning consent for its £300m new stadium and residential development at Cardinal Court.

The council refused plans for the 1,048-home development and 9,026-spectator stadium at the committee this week.

Plans from GolDev Developments, working in a joint venture with Dukelease Properties, sought to deliver a high-density residential scheme to pay for the new stadium. The scheme was designed by Holmes Miller with completion expected to take six years.

Woking FC chair Rosemary Johnson said: “Our purpose has always been to provide a base for our football club to excel and, in so doing, to safeguard and grow our expansive work with the young and most vulnerable in Woking. This would have done that for generations to come.”

She said she was disappointed by the failure of ward councillors to meet with club representatives during the public consultation.

Johnson said: “We have found that bewildering as we have sought to make our case, no reason has been given. We feel that our supporters deserved better.”
