The Ministry of Justice will close women’s prisons East Sutton Park, in Kent, and Askham Grange, near York.
The jails are said to be unfit for purpose because they feature dormitories instead of cells and offenders are reluctant to be transferred to them. The closures will take the number of prisons shut since the 2010 election to 21.
