Wood Wharf PBSA tower plans turned down

WW F1 Student Development Company’s application for a 912-bed student accommodation scheme in Wood Wharf, E14, has been refused by Tower Hamlets Council.

A decision on the 46-storey scheme was previously deferred due to a split vote. It has now been refused despite being recommended for approval by planning officers

Councillors were divided on plans for the site at 7 Brannan Street and whether the introduction of so many students into the area would affect the social cohesion of the community.

The council has now refused the application due to concerns about noise pollution and “student lifestyle choices such as parties and late-night gatherings which can lead to friction even without overtly anti-social behaviour”.

Councillors also said they believe the site is not suitable for student accommodation, as they have previously received concerns about student developments, especially as the development will “accommodate over 1,000 students under one roof”.

DP9 advised on planning.
