High-street retailer Woolworths has snapped up six C&A stores across the country following C&A’s announcement that it is pulling out of the UK market.
The retailer has taken the leases on units in Chester, Metro Gateshead, Wood Green, Ilford, Derby and Slough after being approached by C&A. All store sizes are between 1,858 sq m and 3,252 sq m (20,000 sq ft and 35,000 sq ft). Chester and Metro Gateshead will open in November and the other four stores will be trading by Easter 2001.
Keith Fleming, managing director of Woolworths, said: “We’re delighted with the purchase of the C&A stores. They’re all in prime locations and they will bring the total number of new stores opened this year to 13 – the biggest number opened in a single year for over 20 years.”
Woolworths has 800 stores nationwide.
