World’s first airport hotel goes to market

PricewaterhouseCoopers is selling the Aerodrome Hotel in Croydon, the world’s first airport hotel, for around £9m.

PwC, which was named as administrator to the hotel on 9 June, has appointed Christie + Co to market the freehold interest of the 109-bedroom hotel.

The hotel has recently been refurbished and comprises a restaurant, three bars and nine conference and meeting rooms.

The hotel opened in 1928 and was designed to be an integral part of the Croydon Airport complex, London’s first international city airport.

High-profile guests include King George VI, English aviatrix Amy Johnson, the actor Douglas Fairbanks and actor and comedian Charlie Chaplin.

David Creamore, director at Christie + Co, said: “With freehold opportunities becoming increasingly difficult to secure due to limited supply, this represents a fantastic opportunity to acquire a high-profile hotel in one of the South East’s premier locations, which we believe will attract the attention of many branded operators.”
