The first tenants will move into a 36-unit Y:Cube scheme in the London borough of Merton this week.
The homes were designed by Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners at a cost of about £45,000 for each unit comprising 26 m² internal space.
Each unit is built off-site in a factory, and then craned into position. As a result the build time is around half that of conventional constructions, while the cost is also a lot lower – at £1,400 a square metre compared with £2,000. The units can be moved up to five times during their expected 60-year lifespan.
