Young Architects and Developers Alliance aims to bridge the gap

Jane-Duncan-RIBAThe divide between architects and developers is shrinking as the industries join forces to bring its young professionals together.

Martyn Evans, chief executive of Uncommon, and Jane Duncan, president of the Royal Institute of British Architects, have launched the Young Architects and Developers Alliance, a networking organisation focused on bringing its “a networking organisation for the industries’ under-35s”.

COMMENT: Catch them when they’re young >>

The first of its quarterly networking events will take place on 24 November at 8 Albert Embankment, a development site that U+I and Pilbrow & Partners are collaborating on.

Each event will be held at a development site and co-sponsored by the developer and the architect working there.

Evans said the group targets professionals under 35 because they are part of the generation that experiences first-hand the problems many face in property, including raising a deposit, getting a mortgage and being able to afford to live where they want.

He said: “The initial aim is simply to bring young architects and development professionals together in a room to make friends and talk.

“Development and architecture professionals are on the front line of trying to solve these problems, problems they share.”

YADA will be run by a volunteer board of four architects and four developers from Argent, Berkeley, U+I and Grosvenor, with Evans and Duncan acting as patrons.

Evans said there will be opportunities for the group to offer other services in the future, including training, conferences and professional development.
