Younger buyers support lower space standards

A survey conducted by YouGov and micro-apartment developer Inspired Homes has found younger generations overwhelmingly in support of revising down space standards.

The survey, which involved showing people videos and stills of Inspired’s properties to see if they would support or oppose such developments being built, suggested that 71% of British adults support the development of micro-apartments sized 31 sq m and above.

Micro-apartments of this size are around 40% smaller than the Government’s nationally described space standard, which specifies that one-bedroom apartments should be no smaller than 50 sq m.

The poll found that those aged below 35 and above 55 were particularly supportive of micro-apartments with 74% supporting in both categories, but the most supportive age group was 18- to 24-year-olds.

Inspired has delivered a number of micro-apartment projects, using the office-to-residential conversion rules to enable it to bypass traditional planning laws.
