YTL gets green light for Filton Airfield

YTL Developments has secured planning approval for the first phase of its £800m redevelopment of Bristol’s Filton Airfield.

The Malaysian conglomerate will develop the former airfield into a new neighbourhood, with the first phase comprising 278 homes and public space.

It will be called Brabazon, named after the first commercial airliner at the 350-acre airfield.

There will be 127 family houses and 151 flats, 16% of which will be for social rent or shared ownership.

A new railway station at Brabazon will connect residents to Bristol Temple Meads, and a Metrobus route will link to both Cribbs Causeway and the city centre.

The scheme, designed by Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios, also includes a public square and crescent at the entrance, with new walkways and cycle paths.

Sebastian Loyn, technical director of development at YTL Developments, said: “Filton Airfield is a historic local landmark. We are working with world-renowned architects to ensure its future lives up to the legacy of its pioneering past.”

YTL bought the site in 2015 and submitted an outline planning application for 2,675 homes two years later. Phase one’s reserved matters application was submitted in January, and approved on 15 March.

Construction is set to begin this year, with the first homes expected to go on sale in 2020, with residents moving in the following year.
