Strabag’s German subsidiary Ed Züblin has been awarded a €70m contract for a cultural quarter project in Dresden on behalf of Kommunale Immobilien Dresden.
The Kulturkraftwerk Mitte project includes new constructions as well as complete renovations of existing buildings and will involve four construction sections with a gross floor area of 30,000 m2. The works will involve the renovation of the former machine hall, whose three floors will house the Puppet Stage and the Studio Theatre, a new seven-storey building for the State Operetta, the renovation of an existing four-storey building into an office and administration tract and construction of a new two-storey workshop.
The preparations for planning and construction are starting immediately and construction work is expected to start in the spring of 2014. The new quarter is being developed on the land of a former power station and will be completed by summer 2016.
Construction of the project will be handled by Züblin’s business units from Thuringia and Saxony, which are involved in the second construction section of the Jena University Clinic and construction of the Dynamic Data Center in Magdeburg/Biere.
CEO of Strabag SE Thomas Birtel expressed his satisfaction with the project implementation for the new cultural quarter: “Especially in times of tight budget resources, the investment in such a beacon project is an important signal for the future that cannot be taken for granted. The will of the city of Dresden to further grow its cultural infrastructure and so enhance its attractiveness in the long term is unmistakable. We very much look forward to being able to put our enormous wealth of experience to use in the successful realisation of cultural buildings here.”
