Troubled high streets were dealt another blow last month as sales shrank, according to a survey by the accountants BDO.
High street sales fell by 2.7%, the seventh month in a row that sales in shops declined and the eleventh month running that growth failed to top 1%. It was the worst August fall for three years.
The country’s retailers are having a torrid year, with House of Fraser the latest to file for administration, after Maplin and Toys R Us earlier this year, and Mothercare and the fashion retailer New Look hitting difficulties.
