Scotland is part of the United Kingdom but has devolved powers. The Scottish Parliament is located in Holyrood in Edinburgh (pictured). In 2014 a vote on Scottish independence from the UK was held, but the majority of the electorate voted to remain.
The University of Edinburgh and University of Glasgow are in the Russell Group of universities and both cities have strong professional and financial services sectors.
Other key industries include bio and medical science, engineering, tech, creative and tourism. Aberdeen in the north east of Scotland is the primary location for oil and energy businesses.

NORTHERN IRELAND

Northern Ireland also has devolved powers from the UK’s central government. A more stable political environment and fiscal stimulus has boosted the province’s economy in recent years.
From 2018 the country’s corporation tax will be 12.5%. It is a global centre for fintech and the world’s most popular TV drama series Game of Thrones has its production base in Belfast, which has boosted tourism and made it popular with digital and media businesses.
